Nessa, it is you who is sweet. I simply admire you. Because I have about sixty years on you, my brain is not broken and is free of fear, uncertainty and even rage (except maybe about pathological narcissist Trump, who wants to destroy our form of government).
He had some good philosophies. That is such a good quote especially now. People are quite sick.
It feels like we need to crack heart open AND tend to it in order to see others as kin and live in a world where no living beings are better or worse per se. Thank you for reading and commenting. You may like my podcast interview on this piece.
I've just come upon this piece of writing and can't tell you how much I see myself in what you are describing. in many ways I have seen the world as more dangerous than usual and I have been isolating more. In 2021, after weathering almost 2 years of covid risk factors, I had to undergo cancer treatment and with a reduced immune system again was isolating myself from people. It is so easy to continue or deep in that isolation and definitely takes effort to expand my world. This year my word of the year is "Connections", trying to encourage myself to stay connected to the outer world.
Thank you for reading and sharing! It sounds like you have been through challenging times as well! The instinct to isolate from others during traumatic times is protective as you know. A part of it could be that your body knows that the experience may be traumatic for you and is protecting you. Personally, I am so peopled out that isolation is my medicine right now. There are seasons for everything. Listen to your body.
For me, Isolation or solitude can be very powerful medicine. It is a time to connect with true self by journeying inward in a safe place- sanctuary. I learned that once I got to connect with my true self, love and protect her- the rest of the connections happen naturally.
I appreciate you taking time to respond here. Thanks for reading.
I appreciate the personal wisdom in your response. I in a way I think I've had too much isolation and it has now become a habit rather than a thoughtful preference.
A lovely piece Nessa. It helps me reflect on my own fractures and think about what more I can and should be doing to mend them. The format is fun too as it is easy to digest. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Chris! Thanks for taking the time to read this and for writing a comment! I know how time is golden for us all. The support and feedback means a lot to me! I am grateful!
David, you are so sweet! Thank you for reading and sharing your thoughts. I believe all of us are beautiful, broken and fearful souls. Our hearts are obscured by our big terrified brains. When I learned how to tame my brain, my heart was freed.
Woah . I love recommendation # 11 - unconditional love
Beautifully said, friend!

Oh, Nessa! This broke my heart and gave me hope.
I have a Paul Farmer quote on my fridge!
"The idea that some lives matter less is the root of all that is wrong with the world."
He had some good philosophies. That is such a good quote especially now. People are quite sick.

Thank you.
It must have been very inspiring and interesting to know him.
Yes, he was a rare bird.
I always found it disconcerting and alarming that we glorify kindness. Since it is in all of our nature.
